July 17, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Natalla Ka\u010danava, chairwoman of the Belarusian Council of the Republic, has met with Uzbek migrant workers who arrived in Belarus this week and were offered employment at a factory in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region, according to state-run media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“While passing through Navapo\u0142ack, I decided to meet with them,” news.by<\/em> quoted the official as saying. “I spoke with the chair of the local executive committee and visited this biomechanical plant, where 10 people are currently employed. As you heard yourselves, they have no complaints. I promised that we would do everything possible to ensure they continue to have no complaints. But to achieve that, of course, we need to stay informed. People also need to understand that earning money requires work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ka\u010danava’s remarks follow yesterday’s statement by Interior Minister Ivan Kubrako\u016d, who warned workers from Uzbekistan about complying with Belarusian law and said police would monitor them as the Viciebsk region prepares for the arrival of thousands of Uzbek nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister made the comments after some Uzbek workers complained about their living conditions and wages in a video that circulated on social media. However, later a group of Uzbek workers released a new video saying they had been offered different jobs, higher wages, free housing and meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said he had invited migrant workers from Uzbekistan to come to Belarus with their families. He made the statement after talks in Minsk with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, the Belarusian ruler defended the decision in televised remarks recorded during his recent trips to economically depressed districts in the Mahilo\u016d and Viciebsk regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move is intended to address severe labor shortages in the country. \u201cWe cannot get by without hiring workers from outside,\u201d the politician argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 5,000 Uzbek workers are expected to arrive in Belarus\u2019 Viciebsk region to fill jobs in agriculture, construction, industry and the services sector, with some also set to work as nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka turned to Uzbekistan after a similar effort to recruit workers from Pakistan failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
