July 23, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The 21st package of sanctions targets more than a hundred banks and crypto operators, over 40 shadow fleet vessels and several oil refineries in Russia and Belarus, the European Union\u2019s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas writes<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her post, Kallas describes the package approved on July 23 as the largest one in four years, totaling 218 listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve hit more than a hundred banks and crypto operators, over 40 shadow fleet vessels, and several oil refineries in Russia and Belarus, who help keep Moscow\u2019s war going,\u201d Kallas says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are also responding to Russia\u2019s relentless attacks on civilians, infrastructure and cultural heritage by listing more than 50 military-industrial entities, including key actors involved in the production of Russia’s long-range drones,\u201d she adds. \u201cThis comes on top of last week\u2019s sanctions on those responsible for the abuse and killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian detainees, alongside tech companies enabling the Kremlin\u2019s repressions of internet users.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kallas, the EU is \u201chitting Putin where it hurts most: cutting off the financial lifelines he relies on to sustain his war. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She warns that new sanctions are in the pipeline and that the EU should be ready to \u201crespond to any further Russian escalation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities sided with the Kremlin, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions, supplying weapons to Moscow and providing other kinds of assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
