July 28, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka noted a good outlook for relations with the United States during his meeting with Belarus\u2019 permanent representative to the United Nations, Valancin Rybako\u016d, today in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I read all the documents you transmit word for word, down to the comma,” \u0141uka\u0161enka was quoted as saying by his press office. “I have formed certain impressions and opinions regarding the United States of America and its wishes. I know how to read between the lines, and it\u2019s not about the lines themselves, but about the spirit of how the leadership of the United States of America thinks. Therefore, even if John [Coale, the US special envoy for Belarus] tries to embellish something, there is no need to do that. I\u2019m an experienced person and know how things really are.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following his last meeting with a US delegation led by Coale on March 19, \u0141uka\u0161enka ordered the release of 250 political prisoners, of whom 235 were allowed to stay in Belarus and 15 were taken to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, more than 400 political prisoners have been released as a result of talks between Minsk and Washington. In exchange, the United States is gradually lifting sanctions against the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
