July 29, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Lithuanian border guards have discovered a new unfinished underground tunnel intended for the entry of undocumented migrants from Belarus into Lithuania, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 11-meter tunnel was found on the evening of July 26 near the village of Perta\u010das in the Var\u0117na district with the help of equipment that detects ground-surface vibrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spotting the border guards, around 20 foreigners, young men in civilian clothing, dispersed in Belarus, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tunnel was supposed to pass under a patrol road. Logs for reinforcing the walls, excavated sand and buckets for digging were found inside. The tunnel had no exit hole and could not have served as a passage for border crossing. Workers filled it with earth to prevent its use in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 27, Lithuanian border guards reported the discovery of an unused underground tunnel extending from Belarus into Lithuania near the village of Pie\u0161\u010diai in the Varena district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tunnels are often used by undocumented migrants from third countries traveling from Belarus to the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, Lithuanian border guards apprehended nearly 40 undocumented migrants who had crossed the border through an underground tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year Belarus\u2019 western neighbors have reportedly prevented 10,058 attempts at irregular entry from Belarus by undocumented third-country foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
