August 5, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A judge in Viciebsk sentenced former deputy chief engineer at a Belarusian oil refinery to 13 years in a maximum-security prison for bribery and abuse of office two days ago, the Supreme Court said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities did not disclose the defendant\u2019s name, but most likely it was a former employee at the Naftan oil refinery in Navapo\u0142ack, Viciebsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also fined 225,000 rubels (nearly $77,000) and barred from holding managerial positions for five years. The court also ordered the seizure of more than a million rubels worth of assets obtained through criminal means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators found that the engineer had a prior verbal agreement with a representative of a foreign company to regularly receive payments in exchange for assistance and sharing information about ongoing procurement procedures to give the company a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foreign company subsequently secured contracts to supply goods and services to the Belarusian oil refinery. The engineer reportedly received a bribe of more than 29 million Russian rubles for his assistance, which indicates that the company was likely based in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of people convicted of corruption offenses increased by 12.5 percent year on year in the first half of 2026, according to the Supreme Court\u2019s data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
