August 6, Pozirk.<\/strong> France\u2019s outgoing Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires Ludovic Royer met with Siarhiej Alejnik, chairman of the international affairs committee in the Council of the Republic, in Minsk on August 6. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants at the meeting discussed the current state and development prospects of the Belarusian-French dialogue, issues relating to trade, economic, and humanitarian cooperation, as well as the results of Ludovic Royer\u2019s diplomatic service in Belarus, reported the press office of Belarus\u2019 upper parliamentary chamber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alejnik reportedly played up the importance of \u201ca constructive and pragmatic dialogue\u201d \u201cregardless of the current geopolitical situation\u201d and emphasized the need for \u201copen channels of communication” to build “mutual respect, find points of contact, and ensure the progressive development of cultural and humanitarian ties.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royer, who is concluding his four-year term in Belarus, noted during a reception at the French embassy in Minsk on July 14 on the occasion of France’s National Day that he was leaving Belarus “with a deep feeling of incompleteness.” “The task that needs to be accomplished to get our relations out of the deadlock is simply superhuman,\u201d he was quoted as saying by the embassy. \u201cI remain optimistic and want to believe that the restoration of our relations will happen thanks to the people and for the people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union\u2019s member states downgraded their diplomatic presence in Belarus to charge d\u2019affaires following the 2020 presidential election, refusing to recognize Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka as its winner and a legitimate president. Belarus has officially designated France an unfriendly state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his phone call with Emmanuel Macron and the French president\u2019s envoy, Nicolas Lerner, head of France\u2019s Directorate-General for External Security, this past May, the Belarusian ruler reportedly sought relief from EU sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is holding at least seven citizens of France in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
