August 7, Pozirk. <\/strong>Latvia did not allow 104 undocumented third-country foreigners to enter its territory from Belarus yesterday, posting the first daily total to exceed 100 in the past 15 days, according to Pozirk\u2019s<\/em> analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia has been recording irregular crossings by undocumented third-country foreigners via Belarus since March 25, with attempts reaching 9,168 during this period. This month, it has already reported 249 irregular crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 1, Latvia suspended the operation of its only operating checkpoint at the border with Belarus, citing \u201ctechnical reasons\u201d linked to a computer system failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk dismissed Latvia\u2019s official explanation for the border closure as \u201cblatantly unconvincing\u201d and threatened that Belarus may respond with \u201cretaliatory\u201d and \u201casymmetric\u201d measures. Latvian border guards resumed checks to process vehicles entering Latvia from Belarus on August 4. However, on the same day, Riga expanded its ban on the import of agricultural products and animal feeds from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The neighboring European Union countries have thwarted 10,710 irregular crossings via Belarus since the start of 2026, with 280 attempts reported this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
