August 8, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>More than 500 Belarusians fighting on Russia\u2019s side have been killed in the war against Ukraine, Vadzim Kaban\u010duk, the United Transitional Cabinet\u2019s defense chief, said at the New Belarus \u0421onference in Warsaw on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several dozen Belarusians are prisoners of war in Ukraine, said Kaban\u010duk, a former deputy commander of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment, a Belarusian volunteer force in the Ukrainian army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to do something about this,\u201d Kaban\u010duk said. He noted that an increasing number of Belarusians are joining Russian forces, particularly residents of the country\u2019s eastern regions. In Klimavi\u010dy, a city of around 16,000 people in the Mahilio\u016d region, there are \u201c15 graves of Belarusians who died in the so-called special military operation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaban\u010duk said that most of those who go to Ukraine to fight  for Russia do so for money and come from economically depressed areas of Belarus. According to him, Russian recruiters from the neighboring Smolensk and Bryansk regions are luring Belarusians into the war zone with lump-sum payments of $30,000 to $40,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is essentially a one-way trip, but people don\u2019t understand it,\u201d Kaban\u010duk said. For 80 percent of them, their first battle is the last one, with a Russian frontline soldier\u2019s average life expectancy in active combat totaling 15 minutes, he noted, citing Ukrainian statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, Kaban\u010duk estimated that several thousand Belarusians are fighting on Russia\u2019s side.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
