August 8, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>Granting legal status to Belarusian residents in Ukraine or commemorating Belarusians killed fighting for Ukraine are \u201cnormal issues for peacetime,\u201d but their resolution has to be postponed because the country is at war, Yaroslav Chornohor, the Ukrainian foreign ministry\u2019s special envoy for relations with Belarusian pro-democracy forces, said during the New Belarus Conference in Warsaw on August 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants at the conference raised concerns about Belarusians\u2019 blocked bank accounts and legalization problems, and the lack of state support for widows of Belarusian volunteers. Delegates also called for memorializing Belarusians who died defending Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is very unpleasant, and we acknowledge it\u2026But Ukraine is in wartime mode, with the entire state machinery focused on survival and victory,\u201d Chornohor said. He added that Ukraine remains a \u201cdemocratic state\u201d and listens to demands from the Belarusian community, \u201cbut its capacities are limited,\u201d especially as Russian airstrikes kill civilians every night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chornohor warned that Ukraine may be \u201con the verge of an even bigger war\u201d and expressed concern about the possibility of the Belarusian army joining the war. He noted that recent ultimatums by President Volodymyr Zelensky to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, including demands to dismantle drone control relay stations, were meant to deter Belarus from entering the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Vadym Halaichuk, co-chairperson of the parliamentary group For Democratic Belarus in Ukraine\u2019s Verkhovna Rada, Ukrainian authorities do not know how to pay compensation to the families of fallen Belarusian volunteers who live in Belarus or Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
