August 10, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime has stepped up its attempts to use Interpol for the persecution of its opponents, with new arrests occurring almost every week, lawyer Leanid Maroza\u016d, an aide to Belarusian pro-democracy leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, said at the New Belarus Conference in Warsaw on August 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a notebook with 17 surnames of people we got out of prison,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Maroza\u016d, the regime is hunting for its opponents abroad and fabricating cases against them to make their extradition requests appear unrelated to politics. Back in 2020, Belarusian authorities did not try to invent anything and simply cited politically motivated charges as grounds for extradition, but after 2024 they started charging targeted individuals with economic and drug-related offences, he said. \u201cThis is very difficult to explain to our international partners and courts,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maroza\u016d said that he had given witness testimony at court hearings in Poland\u2019s Poznan and in the United States and argued that Belarus is a dangerous country for deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted the expansion of the geography of persecution from Europe to other regions. \u201cLiterally the latest case was in Argentina. [Another one was] in very safe Italy. Not to mention Georgia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maroza\u016d called on foreign partners to take measures to rule out the politically motivated use of Interpol, while preserving its ability to for prosecute real criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
