August 10, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Pavie\u0142 Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s representative on education, warned of what he called the increasing militarization and degradation of Belarus\u2019 educational system<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCamouflaged guys armed with pistols and Kalashnikovs come to children [in child daycare centers] and let them hold the weapons,\u201d Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d said, speaking at the New Belarus Conference in Warsaw on August 9. \u201cIn schools, there are militarized games for every age group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d, Belarus has more than 600 “so-called military patriotic clubs” for children. \u201cThis year, tenth-grade students were sent to ten-day bootcamp,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir program envisages that a graduate, a 16-17-year-old, must be ready for combined arms combat as part of a motorized infantry platoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d also pointed to other education projects catering to the defense industry, including a new Academy of Intellectual Technology recently ordered by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the trends in the educational sector, Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d also noted the political indoctrination of children, Russification, the continuation of political repressions, poor quality and international isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of schoolchildren studying all subjects in the Belarusian language decreases by between 3,500 and 5,000 every year, Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d said. \u201cIf we don\u2019t stop this, none will be left in 18 years,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past five years, Belarus has lost 13,000 teachers, or eight percent of the total number, Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d said, adding that most of them were fired for political reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At universities, according to official statisticians, the share of those holding doctoral or a doctoral candidate\u2019s degree has dropped to 40 percent in five years, which means that universities have lost 2,700 employees with academic degrees, Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
