August 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The neighboring European Union countries prevented 77 attempts by undocumented third-country foreigners to enter their territory from Belarus on August 12, according to Pozirk\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia and Poland reported 66 and 11 attempts at irregular entry, respectively. Lithuania recorded no migrant activity at its border with Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 11, border control agencies reported 121 incidents in which irregular migrants tried to cross into EU countries from Belarus, the largest number in 20 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, the primary target of irregular migration from Belarus in recent months, has recorded attempted crossings for 141 consecutive days now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 729 attempts at irregular entry were reportedly prevented in the first 12 days of August, including 614 into Latvia, 73 into Lithuania and 42 into Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of attempts at irregular border crossing decreased by 60 percent compared with the first 12 days of July, when 1,188 cases were reported, including 1,106 by Latvia, 50 by Poland and 32 by Lithuania land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors reported thwarting 11,159 irregular crossings since the start of 2026, including 9,674 into Latvia, 1,108 into Lithuania and 377 into Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
