Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Politician Alaksandar Milinkievi\u010d, who passed away on August 11, always sought consensus, which the authorities mistakenly perceived as weakness, but \u201chis moral strength lay in that apparent weakness,\u201d Nobel Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bialiatski added that he had known the late politician since the 1990s. \u201cHe was an intellectual, which is unusual in today\u2019s official Belarusian political landscape,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNon-confrontational, unlike his longtime opponent, firm in his pro-European convictions and consistent in his support for the Belarusian language and culture. He was a reliable friend and like-minded colleague. He was too good for these harsh times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veteran opposition politician Zianon Pa\u017aniak said Milinkievi\u010d \u201cembodied Belarusian patriotism,\u201d acting as \u201can advocate of soft power, gradualism and compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
