Kandrusievi\u010d added that he felt well in early July, but a routine checkup revealed abnormalities in his electrocardiogram, prompting doctors to send him to the hospital. Doctors reportedly suspected he was on the verge of a heart attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, he was diagnosed with skin cancer and started chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kandrusievi\u010d had headed the archdiocese of Minsk and Mahilo\u016d since 2007 until his resignation in 2021 at the age of 75. His criticism of police violence during the 2020 political crisis irritated Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 2020 presidential election, the relationship between the state and the Catholic Church deteriorated as many priests and faithful denounced police brutality and repression.
