August 19, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>Ukraine\u2019s foreign ministry is drafting a strategy for bilateral relations with Belarus, Minister Andrii Sybiha told the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine\u2019s unicameral parliament) on August 19, stressing that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime should be punished, and that cooperation with Belarusian pro-democracy forces would be increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Sybiha, the strategy will soon be unveiled at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada\u2019s Foreign Policy Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He warned that Belarus \u201ccontinues to pose a threat to both Ukrainian and European security\u201d and stressed that the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime must be held accountable for its participation in Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sybiha noted that Kyiv had \u201cstructured its approaches\u201d on Belarus and \u201cestablished proper cooperation\u201d with its pro-democracy forces. He recalled that a special envoy for relations with them had been appointed and promised that Kyiv would be \u201cinstitutionally strengthening\u201d these ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja stayed in Ukraine on May 25 and 26, where she met with Volodymyr Zelensky and held talks at the Ukrainian foreign ministry. Discussions reportedly focused on regional security and coordination of efforts against Russia and \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have someone to talk to,\u201d Sybiha said in a Facebook post following the visit. He described Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s invitation to Kyiv as Ukraine\u2019s \u201casymmetrical move\u201d in response to \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s \u201crather strange proposal for contacts at the leadership level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
