August 19, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has congratulated Andr\u00e1s Baka on his election as president of Hungary, expressing confidence that Budapest would continue cooperating with Belarusian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am confident that the vast historical experience and wisdom of the Hungarian people will continue to guide your country toward open and balanced engagement in the international arena, including with Belarus, which, like Hungary, occupies a special place in the heart of Europe, at the crossroads of cultures and civilizations,\u201d the Belarusian ruler says in his message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to \u0141uka\u0161enka, \u201can equal dialogue that takes into account the national interests of both states is a solid foundation for genuinely fruitful cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 11 August, Hungary\u2019s parliament elected Andr\u00e1s Baka, a former judge of the European Court of Human Rights and a former head of Hungary\u2019s Supreme Court, as president, with 140 of the 199 lawmakers voting for him. All 51 MPs belonging to former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n’s party Fidesz walked out of the chamber before the vote, in protest against the removal of the party\u2019s Tam\u00e1s Sulyok from the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 13, \u0141uka\u0161enka congratulated P\u00e9ter Magyar of Hungary\u2019s Tisza Party on victory in the 2026 Hungarian parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka expressed hope that \u201cHungary\u2019s strong voice on the international stage will continue to be heard in the spirit of pragmatism, a commitment to maintaining universal security and respect for all nations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am convinced that the traditions of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation that have developed over many years between Minsk and Budapest must continue,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 12, Tisza secured a constitutional majority, ending the 16-year rule of Fidesz, which pursued anti-European, anti-Ukrainian and pro-Russian policies, particularly in recent years. Orb\u00e1n\u2019s rule was marked by Hungary\u2019s consistent opposition to the tightening of the European Union\u2019s sanctions against Belarus and Russia. Hungary is the only EU country represented in Minsk by an ambassador. The other member states downgraded their diplomatic presence in Belarus to charge d\u2019affaires following the 2020 presidential election, refusing to recognize Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka as its winner and a legitimate president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
