August 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The neighboring European Union countries prevented nine attempts by undocumented third-country foreigners to enter their territory from Belarus on August 24, the smallest number since August 2, according to Pozirk\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All nine attempts at irregular crossing targeted Latvia. Lithuania and Poland recorded no migrant activity at its border with Belarus. Two crossing attempts by irregular migrants, both into Latvia, were reported on August 2. The number of thwarted crossings ranged from 138 on August 16 to 10 on August 19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 1,342 attempts at irregular entry were reportedly prevented in the first 24 days of August,including 1,091 into Latvia, 209 into Lithuania and 42 into Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of attempts at irregular border crossing decreased by 33.1 percent compared with the first24 days of July, when 2,005 cases were reported. It dropped 3.9-fold against the same period of August 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors reported thwarting 11,772 irregular crossings since the start of 2026, a 2.8-fold drop year-on-year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
