August 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> All of Belarus\u2019 western neighbors have been recording irregular crossings via Belarus by undocumented third-country foreigners over the past two days, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of Lithuanian, Latvian and Polish border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The neighboring European Union countries reported 25 such attempts on August 26 and 68 attempts on August 27. Of these, Lithuania thwarted 27 attempts; Poland, 12; Latvia, 54.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of this month, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland have recorded 1,445 attempts to cross their borders irregularly, with Latvia accounting for the largest share with 1,155. The number of attempts fell 36 percent month on month and more than fourfold year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Lithuanian border guards arrested a Pakistani and two Algerians who had entered the EU irregularly via the Belarus-Latvia border and fled from an asylum center in Latvia while attempting to reach Germany. The two Algerians tried to board a Vilnius-Berlin flight, while the Pakistani national was travelling to the German capital by bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia\u2019s border with Belarus is four times shorter than Lithuania\u2019s \u2014 173 km compared with 679 km \u2014 yet it has recently seen a significant increase in irregular migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
