September 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Italian foreign ministry will investigate the circumstances surrounding the issue of an Italian tourist visa to a Belarusian suspected of plotting a drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat made this statement following an informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Wicklow, Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An investigation should establish the facts and verify the reasons for the visa issue, Quotidiano Nazionale <\/em>cited Tajani as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official also said that visa applications are subject to a specific procedure and that, unless there are \u201cspecific red flags\u201d concerning an individual and all required criteria are met, a visa is issued. \u201cThe problem isn\u2019t the visa, the problem is certain countries\u2019 attitude toward Europe,\u201d the official noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, German media reported that a suspected perpetrator of a failed drone bomb attack at Leipzig Airport last month was identified as a Belarusian man who had entered the European Union on an Italian visa issued in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspect reportedly holds a Russian passport and is known for offenses committed in the Baltic states. German authorities say that he is believed to have entered the Schengen Area using an Italian tourist visa issued in late April. The other suspect is a man of Russian origin holding a Latvian passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attempted attack occurred on the night between August 4 and 5, with airport staff discovering an explosives-laden drone inside a restricted area of Leipzig Airport, close to a Ukrainian Antonov An 124 cargo aircraft used to transport weapons and ammunition for Ukraine\u2019s military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least two other drones were found during subsequent searches. One of them had collided with a DHL cargo plane, and fragments of the other carrying 50 grams of hexogen were found in a nearby field on August 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both suspects reportedly fled the EU after the incident, beyond the reach of investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to the incident, Germany announced the closure of Russia\u2019s last remaining consulate in Bonn and terminated the agreement governing the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow denied all accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
