September 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus\u2019 newly appointed Ambassador Anatol H\u0142az reportedly used a series of official meetings in Baghdad between September 1 and September 3 to emphasize the country\u2019s interest in restoring ties with Iraq, including trade and security cooperation and assistance with modernizing Iraq\u2019s electricity infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 1, H\u0142az presented a copy of his credentials to Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. The Belarusian ambassador, who is based in Turkey, spoke about reviving the Belarusian-Iraqi commission on economic cooperation, the Belarusian foreign ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H\u0142az and Hussein reportedly discussed organizing consultations between the two foreign ministries, expanding business contacts and finalizing several interstate agreements. Also under discussion were prospects trade and logistics cooperation and the export of Belarusian pharmaceuticals and joint cooperation projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H\u0142az later met Abdul Amir al\u2011Shammari, head of the Office of the Commander\u2011in\u2011Chief of Iraq\u2019s Armed Forces, to discuss regional security, the situation in Iraq and possible exchanges of expertise between the relevant agencies of both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 3 September, H\u0142az held talks with Electricity Minister Ali Sa’di Wahib, focusing on cooperation in the energy sector, including Belarus\u2019 potential role in modernizing Iraq\u2019s electricity infrastructure and supplying necessary components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ambassador also joined executives of Belarusian pharmaceutical companies at a business forum and meetings with Iraqi businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus and Iraq established diplomatic relations in 1996. Iraq maintains an embassy in Minsk, while Belarusian interests in Iraq are represented by the embassy to Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, trade between Belarus and Iraq amounted to $40.5 million, with Belarusian exports at $3.4 million and Iraqi imports at $37.1 million, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity that compiles detailed global trade data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
