September 4,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0Host countries may start extraditing Belarusians who left after 2020, U\u0142adzimir Harahlad, an official at the interior ministry\u2019s Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption (HUBAZiK), said on a show broadcast by Radio Minsk on September 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harahlad expressed hope that European countries may change their mind on Belarusian exiles. \u201cToday we don\u2019t extradite [them], tomorrow we do. Today we sever some convention tomorrow sign it again, and voila, now we will be cooperating with you,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Belarusian police cannot go abroad to bring lawbreakers back to their home country, the principle of the inevitability of punishment still stands, Harahlad said. According to him, some exiles \u201cwhose guilt has been proven\u201d have already been sentenced and may one day come within Belarus\u2019 reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harahlad warned that police are constantly monitoring the Internet, paying more or less attention to certain platforms depending on their popularity, and that any Internet user can be identified and punished. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

HUBAZiK has been playing a key role in the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime\u2019s crackdown on opponents following the historic 2020 post-election protests. The unit is notorious for using violence and forcing detainees to testify against themselves on camera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 2, Belarus\u2019 Prosecutor General D\u017amitryj Hara met with Georgian Ambassador Giorgi Saganelidze in Minsk to discuss the extradition of \u201ccriminals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hara and Saganelidze discussed cooperation \u201cin the area of criminal law,\u201d with Hara informing the ambassador \u201cabout the state of Belarusian\u2011Georgian cooperation in providing mutual legal assistance in criminal cases, handing over criminal cases for prosecution as well as extraditing persons who have committed crimes,\u201d the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime had stepped up its attempts to use Interpol for the persecution of its opponents, with new arrests occurring almost every week, said Leanid Maroza\u016d, an aide to Belarusian pro-democracy leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, at the New Belarus Conference in Warsaw on August 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
