September 8, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The Belarusian regime is repressive, and sanctions against Belarus should be tightened, Asta Skaisgiryt\u0117, the chief foreign policy adviser to the Lithuanian president, said on \u017dini\u0173 radijas<\/em> on September 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania is neither hardening, nor softening its stance on Belarus but simply adhering to its policy, Skaisgiryt\u0117 said, expressing confidence that Vilnius will stand its ground \u201cdespite all discussions that arise in the public space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Skaisgiryt\u0117, Vilnius currently sees no preconditions for a political dialogue with Minsk. “You see, to start a dialogue, you need to know what to talk about,” she explained. “What can we talk about in this case? The Americans have started such a dialogue and are negotiating the release of political prisoners. I think there should a significant change of circumstances for a meaningful dialogue to be possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da said in his annual address to the parliament on June 16 that Vilnius firmly supports and advocates for tougher international sanctions against Russia and Belarus.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur country has no intention of compromising when its national security interests are directly affected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 2, Naus\u0117da said that Vilnius would start a dialogue with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime if Minsk demonstrates its \u201cgoodwill.\u201d He set out conditions for Lithuania to start considering dialogue. Those included the safe return of all Lithuanian trucks that had been stranded in Belarus since the fall of 2025, an end to irregular crossings by third-country migrants via Belarus and to incursions of cigarette-smuggling balloons. Minsk allowed Lithuanian trucks to return but has not fulfilled the two other conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
