September 8, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> For Russia Belarus is mainly a military asset and strategic space, while for Europe it is a source of military threat, Yaroslav Chornohor, the Ukrainian foreign ministry\u2019s special envoy for relations with Belarusian pro-democracy forces, said on September 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during an online discussion organized by the Ukrainian Prism think tank\u2019s academic program, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Belarusian political analyst Roza Turarbiekava, Chornohor said that the \u201cmain risk today is that Belarus could be used to open an additional military front on NATO\u2019s eastern flank.\u201d The main danger is not the possible deployment of Russian troops, as more than 2,000 of them are permanently stationed in Belarus anyway, according to iSANS, but the use of Belarus\u2019 geographic location to \u201calter the strategic configuration\u201d in the region, especially for the Baltic states, with new opportunities for pressure on Europe for the mitigation of Russia\u2019s own military risks, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chornohor stressed, citing President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybih, that Belarus should not be equated with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime, that the Belarusian people are not \u201cthe source of aggression,\u201d and that \u201ca democratic Belarus could potentially become part of the solution to the security problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Ukrinform<\/em> published on September 7, Oleh Ivashchenko, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine\u2019s defense ministry, said that Kyiv is monitoring Russia\u2019s attempts to directly draw Belarus into its war against Ukraine, but there are currently no signs that Belarus is preparing to enter it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities sided with the Kremlin, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions, supplying weapons to Moscow and providing other kinds of assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
