September 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Main Council of the unofficial Union of Poles in Belarus authorized its head And\u017celika Borys to \u201ctake steps toward legalizing its activities,\u201d she told TVP Wilno<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the Union \u201coperates in a complex political environment, in an atmosphere of mistrust,\u201d according to the activist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have indications that the Union of Poles could become a legal entity and operate within Belarus\u2019 legal framework,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, it is very important that the Belarusian authorities convey these signals to the Polish side, and that the Polish side confirm to us that the Belarusian authorities genuinely intend to allow this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime presented the Polish minority organization with a proposal intended as a \u201cgesture of goodwill toward Warsaw,\u201d centrumeuropy.pl <\/em>reported, citing sources that wished to remain anonymous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 5, the Union’s Main Council met in Bia\u0142ystok, Poland, after Belarusian authorities refused to allow its congress to be held in Hrodna on September 13, reportedly considering a gathering of more than 100 Polish minority activists as unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borys wants to re-register the Union, and dropping its current name could be a condition for the Belarusian authorities to allow the Polish minority to resume cultural and educational activities, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Main Council authorized Borys to negotiate with Minsk, on condition that she keep Poland\u2019s foreign ministry informed. It also postponed the congress to March 2027, citing \u201csecurity reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
