September 9,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong><\/em> Moscow and Minsk are building a system of militarization aimed at drawing Belarusian youth into the Russian war machine, Marharyta Vorychava, a youth policy aide to \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, said at a briefing for foreign diplomats in Tallinn on September 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state initially drums into young people\u2019s heads that military service is a must and that they should not ask questions. Young people then go to Russia to study because they have few other affordable options, she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To counter this trend, she urged European Union countries to offer Belarusians easier access to European education, multiple-entry visas and scholarships, as well as support for those who refuse to do military service. She also suggested launching an awareness campaign about the risk of military recruitment for those pursuing education in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Vorychava, around 13,000 Belarusians currently study at Russian universities, while 1,338 have been recruited into the Russian army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
