September 14, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s recent remarks about mobilization are merely rhetorical and do not signal any intention to go to war, Ukrainian analyst Vitaly Portnikov said, while talking to exiled Russian journalist Yevgeny Kiselev on YouTube show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three days ago, the Belarusian ruler accused Western countries of directing \u201caggressive rhetoric at Belarus\u201d and reiterated that the authorities need to \u201cprepare for war in order to avoid it\u201d during his visit to the Abuz-Lasno\u016dski training ground near Baranavi\u010dy in the Brest region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u201cThe army needs a good shake-up; the time has come,\u201d the politician told journalists from Belarusian state-run media. \u201cThat includes the entire army. We\u2019ll inspect everyone, right up to mobilization.\u201d On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that most combat readiness checks of the Belarusian army are coordinated with Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should \u0141uka\u0161enka face pressure to make specific decisions, he \u201cwill once again come up with a thousand explanations for [Russian President Vladimir] Putin as to why this cannot be done,\u201d Portnikov noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk\u2019s potential involvement in Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine now poses a threat to the Belarusian regime itself, the analyst said, noting that the Belarusian army has never participated in combat operations. Ukraine clearly understands the threat and is preparing for a possible attack from Belarus, perhaps not by the Belarusian army but by Russian forces, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portnikov also stressed the difference in public sentiment between Russia and Belarus, noting that while the Russian public views the war, if not positively, then at least with a degree of acceptance, Belarusian society was opposed to the conflict from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The analyst did not rule out that \u0141uka\u0161enka is seeking to intimidate Europeans with his remarks amid the failure of the Trump administration\u2019s peace efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
