September 15, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The drone that entered from Belarus overnight and was shot down by NATO fighter jets over central Lithuania was carrying explosives, Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An explosive device was found and neutralized by bomb disposal experts, he said, adding that the examination of the drone will continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaunas said that he had discussed the incident in detail with Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. The latter reportedly expressed \u201cfirm support for regional security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTogether, we thanked the fighter jet crew for their decisions and actions,\u201d Kaunas wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, he reported that \u201cNATO air policing mission fighters destroyed a drone that violated Lithuania’s airspace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early hours on September 15, the Lithuanian military detected a flying object entering Lithuania\u2019s airspace. Residents of Vilnius and several regions received a potential air raid alert. Italian NATO fighter jets were scrambled from the \u0160iauliai air base to intercept it. The drone\u2019s wreckage was later found in the Kai\u0161iadorys district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier today, Deividas Matulionis, a senior aide to Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da, said that Minsk did not warn Vilnius about a drone that entered Lithuania via Belarus overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys told journalists that Lithuania would consult with its allies over the drone incursion from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis morning, I informed our allies and partners about the situation and that we are requesting discussions on these issues both within the European Union and NATO, as it is clear that we all still have a lot of work to do,\u201d LRT<\/em> quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister also announced that Lithuania would send a diplomatic note to Belarus in connection with the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
