September 17, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da has made it clear that Vilnius will not immediately lift sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers despite the release of 25 political prisoners by Minsk yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania has a clear understanding of the situation in Belarus and views it realistically, he told LRT<\/em> yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk freed the 25 dissidents in exchange for the lifting of United States sanctions on two Belarusian companies. Washington is reportedly putting pressure on Vilnius to lift its sanctions on potash transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius sees Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka as he is, Naus\u0117da stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have our position, and we have made it clear,\u201d Delfi<\/em> quoted him as saying. \u201cIn some cases, it aligns with the European Union\u2019s position. The ban on the export of Belarusian fertilizers is in effect at the EU level. It has been extended for 12 months, and we will revisit the issue early next year, when Lithuania holds the presidency of the EU Council of the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the released 25 Belarusian regime critics were taken to Lithuania following talks between \u0141uka\u0161enka and John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus, in exchange for Washington lifting sanctions against Bie\u0142lesbumpram and \u0141akafarba, Belarusian producers of wood products and paints, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his previous visit to Minsk in March, Coale secured the release of 250 political prisoners. Fifteen were taken out of the country, while the rest were allowed to stay in Belarus. In return, Washington lifted some sanctions, including those on potash companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian officials have repeatedly denied allegations that Washington pressured Vilnius over the lifting of sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
