September 18, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The United States officially lifted sanctions against the Bie\u0142lesbumpram woodworking giant and the \u0141akafarba paint manufacturer, according to information posted by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on its website yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus, negotiated the lifting of sanctions during talks with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in Minsk two days ago. In return, Belarusian authorities freed 25 designated political prisoners who were immediately taken to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale told \u200cReuters<\/em> on Wednesday he expects to visit Belarus again around one month from now, hoping to \u2060secure the release of hundreds more prisoners. \u201cI hope hundreds (are released). I \u2060don\u2019t know. That\u2019s my hope,\u201d Coale reportedly said of his next \u2060planned trip to Minsk. \u201cI\u2019m confident that we\u2019ll get \u2060a lot more out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his visit to Minsk in March, the US diplomat secured the release of 250 political prisoners. Fifteen were taken out of the country, while the rest were allowed to stay in Belarus. In return, Washington lifted some sanctions, including those on potash companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
