September 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka ordered the government to reverse a downward trend in housing construction, stressing that housing loans should be available without bureaucratic delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the National Statistics Committee (Bie\u0142stat), two million square meters of housing was put into operation in Belarus in the first eight months of 2026, or 11.7 percent less than in the same period in 2025. A total of 19,600 new apartments were built, a decrease of 18.7 percent year on year. As many as 29,000 apartments were reportedly built in Belarus in the same period of 2021.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 542,000 households are currently on waiting lists for better housing conditions, with housing totaling 6.5 million square meters to be built between 2026 and 2030, including five million square meters with government support, \u0141uka\u0161enka told officials during a government conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reiterated that one square meter of housing should not exceed the country\u2019s average before-tax monthly pay, which stood at 3,172 rubels ($1,145 at the National Bank\u2019s exchange rate) in July, according to the National Statistics Committee (Bie\u0142stat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka criticized authorities for building housing to meet targets rather than real needs. \u201cAs it turns out, the Hrodna or Mahilo\u016d regions don\u2019t need housing, but someone imposes housing construction on them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka described the construction of rental housing, which is provided to people by their employers, as the main way to meet housing needs and staff government-funded jobs. He expressed bewilderment that \u201c17,000 residential properties\u201d are standing idle while authorities are spending money for their maintenance and people have nowhere to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
