September 23<\/strong>, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. <\/strong>The European Union’s stance on Belarus is firm and principled, and EU countries will not allow Belarusian potash purchased by the United States to pass through their territory, Belarus’ pro-democracy leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told Deutsche Welle<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja stressed that “now isn’t the time to trade with dictators.” “I understand America’s national interests, that it wants to buy potash, but I really don’t understand how it’s technically possible,” she said. “If the potash is to go through Russia, I don’t know if Russian ports have sufficient capacity to handle such an amount of [potash]…and how the deal stacks up with the duties recently imposed by Trump on Russia.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja warned that “humanitarian” talks with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka on the release of political prisoners should not turn into political re-engagement with the regime leading to the international of \u0141uka\u0161enkaas president of Belarus. She noted the commitment of John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus, to liberating all political prisoners in Belarus. “However, now isn’t the time to start a relationship with \u0141uka\u0161enka, who is a pariah, who persecute his own people and who also helps Russia in its war against Ukraine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deividas Matulionis, national security advisor to the Lithuanian president, told LRT Radio<\/em> that the Baltic states are not making concessions to the United States regarding the transit of Belarusian potash through their territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200b\u201cAny violation of EU sanctions would have a moral aspect, as well as legal and financial ones\u2026It would be a kind of moral humiliation,\u201d Matulionis warned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday that a \u201cpotash deal\u201d with Belarus would benefit the Unites States and denied that it would strengthen Russia\u2019s hand in its war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBelarus has a lot of potash and our farmers need good prices and we want to get a lower price in Canada. We will continue to go with Canada, but Belarus would like to sell it for a much lower price,\u201d Trump said<\/a> during a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly\u2019s High-Level Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 21, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the United States is \u201cworking on a massive deal with respect to the purchase of potash from Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier on Monday, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said that Belarus cannot supply large volumes of potash fertilizers to the United States because its output has already been pledged to other countries under contracts for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk and Washington have been discussing possible potash exports to the United States as part of their talks that have resulted in the release of hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners and the removal of some US sanctions against Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
