September 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja held several meetings with politicians in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, including with Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jan\u0161a and Romanian President Nicu\u0219or Dan, her press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meetings focused on the security situation in Belarus and the region, the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime\u2019s dependence on Russia and Belarus’ militarization. Cichano\u016dskaja proposed a separate briefing with representatives of the BelPol opposition group on Russian and Belarusian military infrastructure and other current threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian politician suggested that Jan\u0161a consider a Slovenian contribution to the International Humanitarian Fund supporting victims of repression in Belarus, as well as rehabilitation programs for released dissidents and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talks also covered support for Belarusian exiles, independent media and victims of repression, as well as the possible establishment of a Friends of a Democratic Belarus group in the Slovenian parliament and the appointment of a special envoy for relations with Belarusian pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a meeting with Romanian President Nicu\u0219or Dan, Cichano\u016dskaja thanked him for his support for the Belarusian people and Romania\u2019s \u201cprincipled stance within the European Union.\u201d They discussed the importance of keeping Belarus on the European agenda and supporting pro-democracy forces and civil society. Dan also invited the Belarusian politician to visit Bucharest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja also met with former United States President Bill Clinton and addressed the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting, where she discussed the situation in Belarus, the work of the exiled Belarusian opposition and ways to maintain international attention on the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
