September 25, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has linked sanctions against Belarusian industries to successes in their import substitution efforts during his visit to the Amkador-Lesma\u0161, that manufactures logging equipment in the Minsk region\u2019s \u0141ahojsk district, his press office says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant\u2019s management briefed the politician on efforts to reduce reliance on imports, including in-house production of components \u201con par with the best foreign designs,\u201d such as harvester heads, the \u201cmost expensive and technology-intensive component\u201d of logging equipment. These efforts reportedly gained importance after Western countries sanctioned Belarusian enterprises. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a time of opportunity,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka said, referring to sanctions. \u201cIf we hadn\u2019t been put under pressure, we wouldn\u2019t have this.\u201d The politician also stressed the importance of manufacturing modern logging equipment to meet domestic demand and secure exports to Russia. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to hurry and move faster,\u201d the Belarusian ruler added. \u201cThere will be no other time like this in the foreseeable future in the history of Belarus \u2014 difficult and challenging, yet at the same time beneficial for us. Under no circumstances should we relax. You\u2019ll be the first to capture the markets that are opening up. And in Belarus, we definitely need to step up timber harvesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 17, the United States officially lifted sanctions against the Bie\u0142lesbumpram woodworking giant and the \u0141akafarba paint manufacturer. John Coale, US special envoy for Belarus, negotiated the lifting of sanctions during talks with \u0141uka\u0161enka in Minsk. In return, Belarusian authorities freed 25 designated political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
