October 1, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> No one should leave prison only to face another sentence, forced exile or continued persecution, Belarusian pro-democracy leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja says on X<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe regime\u2019s persecution does not end when political prisoners leave prison,\u201d she says, citing a new report<\/a>the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, at least 66 convicted political prisoners are currently behind bars on new criminal charges. Former prisoners face police surveillance and restrictions on employment and access to banking services and their families are being harassed, Cichano\u016dskaja says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those forced into exile face revoked passports, new criminal cases and the confiscation of their homes, she adds, noting that Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki (Ales Bialiatski)\u2019s passport had been annulled despite remaining valid until 2028. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery release matters,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja says. \u201cBut lasting change means ending new arrests and political prosecutions, annulling unjust convictions and restoring people\u2019s rights.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
