{"id":206114,"date":"2026-10-03T22:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T19:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/206114\/"},"modified":"2026-10-03T23:11:05","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T20:11:05","slug":"borrell-repression-in-belarus-has-not-stopped-since-1994","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/206114\/","title":{"rendered":"Borrell: Repression in Belarus has not stopped since 1994"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>October 3, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Although Belarus has \u201cdisappeared from news reports\u201d because Ukraine has occupied all the information space, politically motivated persecution there began in 1994 and has not stopped since then, the EU\u2019s former foreign policy chief Josep Borrell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/oZTslmibDy8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> during a major international forum on Spain\u2019s La Toja Island on October 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrell, who had served as the EU\u2019s high representative on foreign affairs and security policy between 2019 and 2024 and is now president of the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB), spoke ahead of a briefing by Belarusian pro-democracy leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and a panel discussion on Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Borrell, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, elected in 1994 \u201cfor the first and only time,\u201d has since run a \u201cbrutal dictatorship,\u201d changed the constitution by force, and rigged every election. There are still around 800 political prisoners in Belarus, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrell called it an honor to follow Cichano\u016dskaja after the events of 2020 and expressed hope that Spanish society would better understand the situation in Belarus. The government of Spain strongly supports the Belarusian opposition represented by Mrs. Cichano\u016dskaja, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrell described Cichano\u016dskaja as the winner of the 2020 presidential election in Belarus and consequently the country\u2019s president-elect. \u201cThe dictator \u0141uka\u0161enka did not recognize the result and unleashed terrible repression that continues to this day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrell named Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s husband Siarhei Cichano\u016dski as \u201cone of the main victims\u201d of the crackdown.
