October 9, Pozirk. Belarusian man Maksim Łapunoŭ, who also travelled under the name of Maksim Kołasaŭ, is suspected of plotting a drone attack at Leipzig Airport in August, The Insider reports, citing a joint investigation with Der Spiegel.

Previous reports named Belarusian Andrej Karšakou as a suspected perpetrator of a failed drone bomb attack at Leipzig Airport after investigators had found his fingerprints on the antenna used to amplify the drone control signal, the journalists said. The man was also reportedly linked to a sabotage incident that occurred in 2024 in Łódź.

Flight records obtained by journalists suggest that Łapunoŭ may also have been involved in the sabotage in Leipzig. On July 19, two weeks before the incident, he flew from Russia’s St. Petersburg to Ankara in Turkey and then to Belgrade in Serbia. Sources in a European country’s law enforcement agencies told The Insider that the man was highly likely to have been in Germany around the time of the incident.

The report did not rule out the involvement of other suspects in the Leipzig sabotage. Border-crossing records show that Karšakoŭ frequently traveled with three alleged accomplices, all Belarusian nationals residing in Russia.

The attempted attack in Leipzig occurred on the night between August 4 and 5, with airport staff discovering an explosives-laden drone inside a restricted area of the airport, close to a Ukrainian Antonov An 124 cargo aircraft used to transport weapons and ammunition for Ukraine’s military.

At least two other drones were found during subsequent searches. One of them had collided with a DHL cargo plane, and fragments of the other carrying 50 grams of hexogen were found in a nearby field on August 14.

Germany accused the Kremlin of orchestrating the attack and announced that it would close Russia’s last remaining consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. Moscow denied all accusations.
