October 10, Pozirk.<\/strong> Vadzim Pisarevi\u010d, deputy head of the Belarusian foreign ministry\u2019s directorate for multilateral diplomacy, called on neighboring European Union countries to \u201cstop the politicization of migration,\u201d prompting a sharp response from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, which accused Minsk of deliberately using migrants to pressure its neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on October 9 at the Ninth Meeting of the UN General Assembly\u2019s Second Committee in New York, Pisarevi\u010d complained<\/a> that in recent years Belarus has \u201cconstantly heard strange accusations\u201d of facilitating illegal migration \u201cas part of a so\u2011called hybrid war.\u201d He called for \u201ccooperation\u201d on migration and warned closing border crossings and building walls along Belarus\u2019 border \u201cwill not solve any problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u013cegs I\u013c\u0123is, Latvia\u2019s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, who was speaking on behalf of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, replied<\/a> the three Baltic states had faced \u201cdeliberate instrumentalization of migrants by Belarus\u201d for more than five years, aimed at undermining their territorial integrity and national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u013c\u0123is accused Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime of the escalation of its \u201chybrid campaign,\u201d noting that Latvia had prevented around 12,000 illegal crossings from Belarus this year. He recalled the recent incident in which a group of masked gunmen attempted to push 20 migrants into the Latvian territory, shouting threats at Latvian border guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u013c\u0123is said that similar incidents occur along other sections of the EU\u2019s external border with Belarus and stressed that protecting those borders is a \u201cEuropean responsibility.\u201d He condemned Belarus\u2019 \u201cdeliberate exploitation of vulnerable people\u201d from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, accusing Minsk of \u201cluring\u201d migrants to Belarus and \u201cfacilitating their dangerous journey\u201d to Europe. These actions, he said, run counter to international human rights standards and expose migrants to exploitation, trafficking, and smuggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u013c\u0123is added that Lithuania had initiated proceedings against Belarus at the International Court of Justice over alleged breaches of the UN Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
