The politician noted the “positive experience of cooperation between the two countries over more than 30 years of diplomatic relations,” his press office reported. Łukašenka expressed confidence that this would serve as a foundation for expanding ties between Belarusians and Spaniards.

In a similar message last year, the Belarusian ruler pointed to mutually beneficial cooperation, constructive dialogue and friendly relations between Belarusians and Spaniards.

As a member of the European Union, Spain did not recognize Łukašenka as the legitimate president of Belarus. The EU imposed sanctions on his officials following the disputed 2020 presidential election, while Minsk designated all EU members as “unfriendly states.”

Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja was given high-level reception in Spain several times, most recently earlier this month.
