October 14, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>A 72-year-old woman resident in Babrujsk, Mahilo\u016d region, has fallen victim to scammers three times since 2024, the regional office of the Investigative Committee reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, the woman lost 2,000 rubels ($610) as a result of talking to fraudsters over the phone, the report said. However, she learnt no lessons and sold her apartment in 2025 to invest her earnings in a supposedly lucrative stock market deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the woman contacted scammers herself after seeing an online message promising exceptionally high returns on investment, the report said. The woman transferred more than 12,000 rubels over several months to various accounts, following instructions by intermediaries. She saw her profits grow on her screen but could not withdraw any money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She eventually contacted a bank and was told to immediately contact the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to investigators, the woman, whose son lives in Russia, was particularly vulnerable to psychological manipulation because she was too eager for human companionship and comfortable retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between October 5 and October 11, police received more than 2,000 reports of scam calls and arrested 12 cash couriers, seizing over 200,000 rubels from them, the interior ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cybercrimes reportedly accounted for 33.4 percent of all criminal offenses recorded in Belarus from January through May 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, Belarus recorded an average of 359 cybercrimes a week, or more than 50 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
