October 19, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The governments of Belarus and Russia are expected to sign a framework agreement for the construction of a third power unit at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) by the end of 2026, the energy ministry\u2019s press office says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev reportedly reaffirmed Russia\u2019s readiness to take the project, noting that the sides still need to agree on financial arrangements and assess additional electricity demand ahead of the launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NPP accounts for about 40 percent of Belarus\u2019 electricity generation, according to official data. The plant has generated more than 68 billion kWh of electricity since its first unit was connected to the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian Energy Minister Dzianis Maroz said higher electricity consumption by businesses allows for lower rates and makes their products more competitive in foreign markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian NPP is located near Astraviec, some 10 miles away from the Lithuanian border. It was designed by Russia\u2019s Rosatom and built with a Russian loan. Units 1 and 2 started commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a \u201cgeopolitical weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government plans to build a third unit and connect it to the grid between 2035 and 2038.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
