October 21, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian Prime Minister Alaksandar Tur\u010dyn has signed a directive removing about 374 hectares in the Homiel region from the list of radiation-contaminated areas, the government\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plots in the Brahin, Buda-Ka\u0161alova, Vietka, Mazyr and \u010ca\u010dersk districts will be returned to agricultural use \u201cwith radiation monitoring of the harvested produce,\u201d it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, during a tour of southern Belarus, contaminated as a result of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, renewed his push to bring more affected land back into production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 25,000 square kilometers of Belarus\u2019 territory remains contaminated, down from 47,000 square kilometers, or 23 percent of the country, in 1986, according to a national report published by the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Ministry for Emergency Management on the 40th anniversary of the catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, \u0141uka\u0161enka urged officials to step up efforts to decontaminate affected areas and return the land to agricultural production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
