October 22, Pozirk. Lithuania did not allow 31 undocumented third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus yesterday after thwarting two attempts on October 20, according to Pozirk’s analysis of border guards’ data.

The number of attempts reported by Vilnius has reached 1,732 since the year’s start, up nearly 5 percent from all attempts reported in 2025.

Attempts targeting Latvia have continued since March 25, with 27 new cases recorded yesterday. Poland did not report irregular crossings via Belarus on October 21.

Belarus’ western neighbors have thwarted 14,494 irregular crossings since the start of 2026, including 12,280 into Latvia and 482 into Poland, a significant decrease from 39,153 crossings in this period last year.

The flow of people eager to cross into the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar Łukašenka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a “hybrid attack” orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.
