October 27, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A Belarusian man was arrested in Latvia\u2019s Valmiera district while transporting undocumented migrants, Latvia\u2019s State Border Guard reported on October 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, police stopped a BMW car driven by the man and found four people inside without valid visas or residence permits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A criminal case has been opened against the Belarusian. He also lacked a valid visa or a residence permit and had failed to a submit a mandatory security risk questionnaire 48 hours before entry into Latvia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year Latvia has been the main target for irregular migrants seeking to enter the European Union via Belarus, accounting for 85 percent of the nearly 14,700 crossing attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2026, Latvia launched a special security operation aimed at stemming the tide of irregular migrants from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the State Border Guard, 170 criminal cases have been opened this year against 120 individuals accused of illegally transporting people and facilitating their illegal stay in Latvia. The offense carries between two and 10 years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
