October 27, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus and Ireland are linked by the struggle for independence and efforts to preserve language and culture under pressure from larger neighbors, Belarusian opposition leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said in Dublin on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a conference titled \u201cIreland and Belarus: National and Cultural Identity\u201d, she recalled visiting Ireland as a teenager under a respite program for children living in areas affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. She described Ireland as her \u201csymbol of freedom\u201d where people may speak openly and criticize the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja drew parallels between Ireland\u2019s efforts to preserve its national identity and Belarusians\u2019 centuries-long struggle against Russification, including under Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. She described the Belarusian language as the regime\u2019s \u201cfirst political prisoner,\u201d citing its crackdown on pro-Belarusian organizations after the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said, however, she was encouraged by Belarusians\u2019 efforts to keep their language and culture alive amid the political crisis in her country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the conference, Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD said: “Today’s conference demonstrates Ireland\u2019s commitment to supporting democratic values and ensuring that Belarus remains high on the international agenda. With the multiplicity of crises facing us globally, it is important that we remain focused on the ongoing situation in Belarus. We stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus, as they continue their peaceful pursuit of democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIreland’s own experience has shown the importance of preserving language and culture as expressions of national identity. Today’s discussions highlighted the vital role that language, culture and identity play in protecting democratic values and sustaining hope in difficult circumstances. The links between Ireland and Belarus have deep roots, strengthened over decades through people-to-people connections and solidarity initiatives. The generosity of Irish families who welcomed Belarusian children into their homes created lasting bonds between our people.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja thanked Ireland for supporting Belarusian pro-democracy forces, independent media and political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference\u2019s keynote speakers include Minister Byrne, journalist Doireann N\u00ed Ghlac\u00e1in and Dublin City University\u2019s professor Donnacha \u00d3 Beach\u00e1in. The event will feature a number of Belarusian and Irish politicians, cultural figures and researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
