October 28, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> UN Special Rapporteur Nils Mui\u017enieks told the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York on October 26 that the overall human rights situation in Belarus continues to worsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his report, which includes a section on gender equality and women\u2019s sights, Mui\u017enieks said that despite Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka declaring 2026 the \u201cyear of the Belarusian woman,\u201d political repression had become increasingly intertwined with gender discrimination. He urged the authorities to implement the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, end politically motivated persecution, release and exonerate women arbitrarily detained for exercising their rights, and restore proper operating conditions for civil society and trade unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom backed the report, while Venezuela criticized it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year\u2019s report by Mui\u017enieks stressed that Belarus kept systematically violating human rights in labor and employment, including discrimination and harassment based on political grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
