October 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Washington is not pressuring Vilnius to resume the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers through the Port of Klaip\u0117da, Delfi <\/em>reports, citing Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevi\u010dius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official made this statement after Politico<\/em> reported that the Trump administration wanted Lithuania to open a Baltic Sea port to Belarusian potash exports despite European Union sanctions. He dismissed the reports as \u201csome behind-the-scenes talk\u201d and an attempt to \u201ctest the waters\u201d and assess the reaction of EU countries, including Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius sets its own policy and has no plans to change it, while \u201cunderstanding both the threats and the reasons\u201d behind the restrictions imposed on Minsk, Sinkevi\u010dius said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk and Washington have been discussing potash exports to the United States as part of their talks that have resulted in the release of hundreds of Belarusian political prisoners and the removal of some US sanctions against Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da made clear last month that Vilnius would not lift sanctions on potash transit. \u201cWe have our position, and we have made it clear,\u201d Delfi<\/em> quoted him as saying earlier. \u201cIn some cases, it aligns with the European Union\u2019s position. The ban on the export of Belarusian fertilizers is in effect at the EU level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EU sanctions against Belarus are in force until February 2027, with the measures due for review during Lithuania\u2019s presidency of the EU Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
