October 30, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus should not become a bargaining chip in negotiations between Russia and the West, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told democratic countries\u2019 diplomats at a meeting in Tallinn yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal of international policy should not be to save Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka from Russian President Vladimir Putin, but to help Belarus free itself from both of them, her aide Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>, citing the politician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja thanked the United States for securing the release of hundreds of jailed Belarusian dissidents, stressing that Washington\u2019s diplomatic efforts must continue, while sanctions imposed over human rights violations could serve as a tool for bringing about change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also expressed separate gratitude to the European Union and other democratic countries for continuing to pressure the regime in Minsk and consistently raising the issues of reprisals and political prisoners with Belarusian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian pro-democracy forces call for a broad political amnesty and the start of an intra-Belarusian dialogue to resolve the political crisis, the politician added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diplomats from Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States participated in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
