November 2, Pozirk. Opposition politician Pavieł Łatuška described the upcoming visit to Minsk by Feridun Sinirlioğlu, secretary general of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), as “illogical” and “inappropriate” in a video posted on YouTube.

Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Ihar Siakreta announced the visit in late October, saying that Sinirlioğlu is expected to attend a conference on Eurasian security in Minsk on November 3 and 4. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also reportedly expected to participate.

Sinirlioğlu is an international official, not a diplomat, Łatuška stressed. While he must maintain some form of communication, there are other more suitable venues for contacts with Belarusian authorities, such as the OSCE headquarters in Vienna, the politician noted.

Łatuška also sent a letter to Sinirlioğlu, describing the current situation in Belarus and urging him to press Minsk to release all jailed dissidents, end reprisals and launch an inclusive dialogue with civil society.

Citing Russia’s use of Belarusian territory to attack Ukraine and the regime’s hybrid operations against neighboring OSCE states, the politician noted that Belarus cannot guarantee regional security as long as Alaksandar Łukašenka remains in power.

A few weeks ago, 37 OSCE member states called on the Belarusian authorities to end repression against the opposition, civil society and independent media.

The joint statement of the Informal Group of Friends of Democratic Belarus also urged Minsk to release and rehabilitate all designated political prisoners immediately and unconditionally and hold perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable.
