November 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Undocumented third-country foreigners resumed their attempts to enter the European Union\u2019s territory from Belarus on November 2 after a one-day break, with Latvia preventing 20 crossing attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before November 1, the neighboring EU countries had recorded attempts at irregular entry from Belarus for 230 consecutive days. Latvia had thwarted entry attempts for 221 days in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania and Poland have seen no such incidents at their border with Belarus for three and 13 days, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Latvia has been the primary target of irregular migration via Belarus, accounting for 84.6 percent of the 14,968 irregular entry attempts reported by Belarus\u2019 western neighbors since the start of 2026, followed by Lithuania with 12.2 percent and Poland with 3.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three EU countries recorded 41,257 entry attempts by irregular migrants from Belarus in the same period of the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people eager to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
