November 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Fateful events that restored people\u2019s faith in equality, justice and decent life occurred on November 7, 1917, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka says in a message of greetings on the occasion of the 109th anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik coup celebrated in Belarus as October Revolution Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe nations\u2019 right of self-determination became the foundation on which we built our country and entered the world arena for the first time as a sovereign state,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greeting the Belarusians on the anniversary, Prosecutor General D\u017amitryj Hara says that \u201cthanks to the October Revolution we have gained statehood, created an economic and intellectual potential and enriched cultural heritage.\u201d He claims that Belarus has preserved \u201chistorical memory\u201d and \u201cthe labor accomplishments of past generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coup that brought Bolsheviks to power 109 years ago paved the way for Josef Stalin\u2019s Great Terror in the late 1930s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, exiled Belarusians held ceremonies across Europe and in democratic countries around the world to pay tribute to victims of Stalin-era mass executions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the night of October 29-30, 1937, often described as one of the darkest chapters of Belarusian history in the 20th century, the Soviet interior ministry\u2019s NKVD executed more than 100 members of Belarus\u2019 intellectual and political elite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them were 22 poets and writers, including Micha\u015b \u010carot, Ale\u015b Dudar, Micha\u015b Zarecki, P\u0142aton Ha\u0142ava\u010d, Todar Kla\u0161torny, Jurka Lavonny, Valeryj Marako\u016d, Majsiej Kulbyk, Isak Charyk, Vasil Sta\u0161e\u016dski, Janka Niomanski, Za\u0142man Pivavara\u016d and Vasil Kaval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid the mass repression unleashed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime following the 2020 post-election protests, foreign diplomats, who are protected by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, are the only ones who are able to commemorate Stalin terror victims without fearing arrest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
